Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Mapping

GIS is a computer system for capturing, storing, checking, integrating, manipulating, analyzing and displaying data related to positions on the Earth's surface. GIS links location to information (such as people to addresses, buildings to parcels, or streets within a network) and layers that information to give you a better understanding of how it all interrelates. Typically, a Geographical Information System is used for handling maps of one kind or another. These might be represented as several different layers where each layer holds data about a particular kind of feature. GIS can reveal hidden patterns, relationships, and trends that are not readily apparent in spreadsheets or statistical packages, often creating new information from existing data resources.

NCC can assist a community with several types of mapping projects from base maps for visual reference to detailed mapping analysis. Many times mapping becomes a part of another service such as maps for the Master Plan, zoning ordinance, hazards mitigation plan and wildfire plan. However, some communities are only interested in updating the maps in these plans and regulations while other communities prefer a more specific type of analysis for land use and development potential. For those reasons, NCC has an established GIS department which can work in collaboration with other services or as a stand alone product.

Map Production

Using existing spatial data layers, NCC can produce custom map products for your community or group. These products may include master plan, natural resource, or zoning maps. Cost: is $400.00 for the first map, each additional map is $200.00. Price includes time to design and print the map. One edit of each map allowed for changes.

Data Production

In cases where digital data is not available or needs to be updated, NCC is available to automate the data. Services may include the digitizing of new zoning districts, the creation of attribute data for parcel mapping i.e. existing/future land use, or creating natural resource mapping. Cost: based on a $65.00 per hour basis.

Data Analysis

For the purpose of performing analytical overlay operations such as build-out analysis or development constraints mapping. Results can be presented in a variety of formats for use in meetings, brochures, reports, or the web. Cost: based on a $65.00 per hour basis.

GIS Training

Onsite one-on-one training is available for towns with ArcGIS 9.X. NCC staff will work directly with individual community staff to bring them up to speed with the GIS technology. Cost: based on a $65.00 per hour basis.

GPS Data Collection

NCC has available for loan or on a contractual basis a Global Positioning System receiver used for the purpose of locating specific data in the field. NCC will refine the data through differential corrections in its offices. Cost: based on a $65.00 per hour basis.
