North Country Council Services

Forest Committee

Responsible Staff: Christine Walker

Purpose

The Forest Committee was created to enable a broad array of community members to work together constructively and have a collective voice on issues pertaining to the White Mountain National Forest in order to have stronger influence with the federal USDA Forest Service.

Description of Work

To date the Committee’s largest accomplishment has been to bring the region together on choosing an alternative of the Forest Service’s revision of the White Mountain National Forest Plan. The White Mountain National Forest serves many uses: it provides clean air and water; it is home to fish, wildlife, and plants; it offers opportunities for recreation and for solitude; it supplies vital timber products.

The Forest Committee provided a mechanism for North Country communities to have input on which alternative within the plan would be implemented. The Committee in the future will continue to monitor issues within the WMNF that impact the region, both its economic impacts and its natural resource impacts.
